Building a world class health facility for local community
FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What is being proposed?
The redevelopment of President Private Hospital in Kirrawee. The project includes a new 72-bed voluntary overnight mental health unit, expansion of rehabilitation services from 47 to 110 beds, upgraded surgical and medical facilities, more private rooms, improved access and modern therapeutic outdoor spaces
What is the project’s status?
Planning approval has been granted. The project is currently progressing through detailed design and preparing for demolition.
Who approved the project?
The redevelopment has been assessed in accordance with NSW planning legislation and relevant environmental and urban design requirements
Why is this project needed?
There is currently no private overnight mental health facility in the Sutherland Shire. Residents must travel outside the area or wait for care.
Rehabilitation services are also operating at full capacity, with growing demand across the region.
The existing hospital is over 50 years old and no longer meets modern healthcare design standards. The redevelopment ensures contemporary, accessible healthcare is available locally.
Will there be any visual Impact?
The building has been carefully designed to respond to surrounding residential areas. Height and scale are stepped down near homes, with the tallest element located at the main road intersection to create a clear landmark.
Landscaping, setbacks and material selection are designed to soften the building and improve the streetscape.
Will noise be an issue?
Once operational, service areas, loading zones and mechanical plant are located below natural ground level or integrated into the building to minimise noise and visual impacts. The design also orients plant and service areas away from neighbouring residential properties.
During construction, noise and vibration are monitored to ensure compliances with regulations.
What benefits are there for the community?
The redevelopment will:
- Provide the first private overnight mental health facility in the Shire
- Expand rehabilitation services to meet growing demand
- Modernise a 50-year-old healthcare facility
- Improve public open space and pedestrian access
- Create additional local healthcare jobs
Overall, the project strengthens access to high-quality healthcare for the Sutherland Shire and surrounding communities
How will traffic and road impacts be managed?
Vehicle access, ambulance entry and servicing have been redesigned to improve safety and efficiency.
The site is located near bus routes and within walking distance of Gymea and Kirrawee train stations, supporting public transport access.
